Jim Robbins, Symphony in the Brain
|
Okay, so I'm not a literary icon, not
even a punctuation mark. But every now and then, I write something and notice...
Hey. That sounds pretty good. or, occasionally, I'll see some pattern in
quotations, and sum it up. So here are a batch of my quotations, accumulated
since about 1979.
- Mistakes are the steps humanity has taken on it’s path toward
advancement, evolution and enlightenment.
Rob Kall
You can be anything you want to be. That's a good starting place. Anything
else and you sell yourself short and compromise your dreams. Your dreams have
wings but no feet, no ground, until you put yourself in them and give them
life.
You will never achieve anything you don't decide you want to try to reach.
That's a reality.
You must decide to become who you want to be. Then you can make plans to
become that person-- to learn the skills, meet the challenges, overcome the
obstacles and focus the energy necessary to achieve your success.
Rob Kall
When you're damned if you do, damned if you don't, you're better off doing
what moves you toward hope and light.
Rob Kall
I’ve learned that it is usually the case that the developer of an idea is
not the most effective presenter and educator about that idea. Ideas need the
fresh air of new minds to help them to spread and be better understood.
Rob Kall, note to Daniel Alegi Sept. 15, 2002
You can do many things you haven't done

When growth stops, death begins.
Kall
CHALLENGE, GROWTH
We encounter the grinding wheels that
sharpen our mental blades many places in life. Adversity, school, parents,
spiritual guides, books, experience are all sharpening teachers. As we grow
older, to stay sharp we must find new grindstones to whet and sharpen our
potential and keep us at our brightest, most penetrating best.

Feel good, not not-bad.
Rob Kall
EXCELLENCE, POTENTIAL, ILLNESS, MEDICINE
Help people to be their best rather than
helping them get rid of their problems.
Kall
DELAY, PATH,
Life is a NOW experience. Too many people
let their heart and spirit die in anticipation of death. Patients can start to
feel good before they are healed OR REACH THEIR GOAL. They can learn to make
the most of each moment regardless of their current health.
Kall
INSPIRATION, BURNOUT
Sometimes visionary thinking burns with a
flame too hot to survive for too long.
Rob Kall 9/95
Stress is nature's way of telling you to
change something-- your reaction to what is going on in your life or... your
job or some other activity or situation. The trick is to take these messages
from the body and to turn them into positive choice points where you are
forced to find new opportunities. The art and challenge is 1)to find the
courage to face the facts that changes have to be made, and, 2)to take the
effort and self responsibility to learn the stress regulation skills you need
to clear your view.
Rob Kall
Sometimes reaading about other people's
sadness can touch an empathic chord in our hearts which moves us deeply. When
out of that pain somehing clearly good, perhaps even beautiful happens, that
chord can become a symphony. A beautiful article which shows there are special
kinds of light which burst onto the planet occasionally.
Rob Kall
FLICKER, AWARENESS, ATTENTION
I think perception oscillates too. I
think a function of being alive in this universe includes oscillating at many
levels in many ways. Oscillation is one of the predominant aspects of human
experience. It's absence means death of sensation or being.
Rob Kall
CREDULITY, IMAGINATION, EVALUATION
A long time ago, I decided it's important
to be able to suspend your disbelief, especially to maximize your imagination.
Rob Kall
Thomas Edison said that invention is one
percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. But I’ve learned that
successful invention is .01 percent inspiration. .99 percent perspiration and
99 percent marketing and distribution.
Rob Kall
Just because we change our conception of
a person from man to myth, from reality to archetype does not diminish the
realness, the impression that "person' has upon our lives, upon our
culture, upon our versions of history. Besides, much of what we think about
historic figures we know to be real is mythic anyway, created by the
historians who heroize or villainize them.
Rob Kall May 12, 2002
Hope is an energy, a metaphysical,
spiritual resource we hold within us-- a small fire that keeps burning when it
seems cold and dark around us, when things seem to be going wrong, when
possibilities seem dim or non-existent. Hope keeps lighting us up inside,
enabling us to see that our heart is still there.
You don’t need special resources to
have hope. Hope will find them for you.
You don’t need courage to have hope.
Hope will give you courage.
You don’t need to see any possible
chance... Hope will find a way.
Hope is a wild animal-- a tiny canary
fluttering on high or a massive elephant barrelling down the road. It can
carry you to places of great challenge, of great beauty, of great passion and
depth. It is a steed you ride with grace and kindness, a blessing you embrace
like the wind, like a horse’s rein, yet you let the rein loose and let fly
with the flow of the ride.
There will always be people who splash
cold water on the embers of hope, who try to dash out the last sparks of
burning aliveness hope gifts us. There will always be people who see parts and
pieces, numbers and data, only seeing the hole, when they think they are
seeing the whole picture. They can blot a vision, thrash a dream and crash
hopes-- but only if you let them.
Look at people like Steven Hawking, whose
dwarfed, deformed shape has not stopped him from having a vision that spans
the universe and beyond. At Beethoven who went on composing amazing music
after he became deaf. But you don’t have to look to Beethoven. There’s a
band composed of all deaf band members and music is taught in schools for the
deaf.

They persevere in the face of great
challenge. That is one of the best parts of being human-- facing great
challenges and finding, with hope and vision, answers we never knew existed.
This is one of the ways we can feel most alive, most in touch with those
spiritual vibrations which remind us that we are all connected to God.

The truth is a funny thing. Seek it and
it shines. Discover it and it glows and sends chills up and down your spine.
But if you hold it too tight, and try to own it, to use it, then it's luster
soon fades. Overshadowed by personal interest, it is no longer a shining
light.
Rob Kall
I have found, from personal experience, that "Truth," very often,
when wielded, is used as an instrument to harm. So, any time I hear someone
saying they are saying the truth, I look to see how they are trying to harm.
Rob Kall
If you seek the truth, that's a different story. But bludgeoning with your
own idea of the truth is often just a matter of opinion. And even if you are
dealing with A truth, it is usually the case that you are not well serving
THAT truth.
Rob Kall
As soon as someone starts claiming ownership of the truth, or claims to be
one who can define the truth, I have to wonder.
Also, as soon as one starts bandying about the word Liar and lying, when
opinions or points of view are at issue, it is very likely that the accusation
will shortly fly back in the face of the person who started it.
Rob Kall
TRUTH, HONESTY, LYING, LIAR
What I have told my kids as they've grown up and tested and experimented, is
that far worse than the potential bad reputation a lie will earn, a lie hurts
you, the teller, because it will effect your own self image, your own soul.
"Do you want to see yourself as a liar? What kind of person will you see
yourself as being then?" This has worked very well for my kids, anyway.
They can look me in the eye and discuss just about anything... truthfully, and
they have good self esteem and are as a result, well respected and trusted by
peers and adults alike.

People embrace stories for different reasons.—the person or institution
telling the story, the frequency it is told. Politics and economics rule. In
the big, dirty world of the war of words (beyond the temples of academe,)
science is not law, just one splotch of color on the palette of influence and
persuasion. I’m not dissing science, just emphasizing that in this world of
powerful influences, the truth is often out-shouted and thus overlooked by
masses drowning in messages provided by sources, in the short-term, louder,
more powerful that the truth-tellers.
